The 3rd Specialty Orthopaedic Review Course (SORC 2017) was successfully conducted at Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital in Mumbai, India, on 18 and 19 August 2017. More than 150 orthopaedic surgeons from across the country attended this course. The theme this year was ‘Technique & Technology’ and keeping in with the theme all the sessions and workshops were focused on educating the attendees on how the optimal use of technology when coupled with the right skills and technique can deliver optimal patient outcomes.

The course began with two workshops on 3D printing and on Team building. The 3D printing workshop was a unique one, conducted for perhaps the first time in the world where orthopaedic surgeons were taught not only the applications of 3D printing in orthopaedics but also the nuances of 3D printing, enabling them to print their patients' model and instruments/tools right from their own desktop. The session convened by Dr Vaibhav Bagaria and Dr Kshitij Chaudhary had eminent faculty from not only orthopaedics but also from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay and 3D printing industry. The other workshop convened by Dr Dhiren Ganjwala was on Team building and focused on conflict resolution amongst a team and its members. As a part of the orthopaedic curriculum, little attention is paid to soft skills like Team building and this workshop, which was attended by a cross-section of health care professionals, left a remarkable impression on all those who attended the workshop.

The course was a comprehensive overview on current developments in orthopaedics with sessions on Spine Surgery, Paediatrics, Joint replacement, Trauma, and Sports medicine. Apart from the didactic sessions, two key elements of the course were Key Note sessions and Debates. The key note session saw four interesting interdisciplinary subjects being discussed: Dr Vaibhav Bagaria spoke about artificial intelligence and the emerging role of Robotics in orthopaedics, Dr Clement Joesph gave a distilled version of the ‘hyped’ field of regenerative medicine, Prof Jayesh Bellare from IIT Bombay talked about the indigenous developments of newer biomaterials and Dr Dhiren Ganjwala completed the T Trilogy of Technique and Technology with his talk on Team work. On the next day, the debate session was equally interesting with some of the best names in the field who slugged it out on the Orthopaedic Akhara (wrestling ring!). Dr Hitesh Gopalan and Dr Tarun Goyal debated whether evidence based medicine was stifling innovation; Dr Mohan Desai and Dr Milind Chaudhary debated on UKR vs. HTO, and Dr Rakesh Bhansali and Dr Neeraj Bijlani spiced up the entire course with their witty debate on Technique vs. Technology.

The entire proceeding was summarised towards the end of the course by Dr Farokh Wadia who on behalf of his team comprising Dr Kshitij Chaudhary, Dr Arjun Dhawale and Dr Vaibhav Bagaria thanked Prof Ashok Johari, President and National Delegate of SICOT India, all the faculty, delegates and sponsors. He reaffirmed the department’s commitment to academics and promised to be back next year with greater enthusiasm.
